What We Charge
Most of our fees are based on page counts.
In our system, a page consists of 250 words. Because individual
writers set up their pages with different fonts and type sizes,
the easiest way to determine the number of pages in an article
or book is to use your word processor’s word-count
system. If you have a 25,000-word manuscript, it is 100 pages
long.
Creative Book Editing
This is our Rolls-Royce. (Go to What We Do
for a full explanation of our services.) Creative editing is
priced by the project after a discussion with the author and a
brief examination of a draft of the manuscript. We charge $8.50
per page for this service. A contract and progress payments are
required. Such projects can take weeks, even months, of an
editor’s time.
Substantive Editing
We charge $7.50 per page for this service,
which includes rewriting, spelling correction, and the
repairing of grammar mistakes.
Copyediting
Most projects fall into this category. A
straight copyedit is appropriate when the author is an
accomplished writer and has polished the manuscript to his or
her satisfaction. The fee is $5.50 per page.
Webiting
Editing a daily Web log requires
coordination between the editor and the blogger. Though the
work can be done quickly, it requires the editor to be
available at a certain time. The minimum fee is $22 for a
1,000-word blog or less (based on $5.50 for 250 words). Longer
blogs will cost proportionally more.
Web site Editing
Some Web sites are so elaborate and contain
so many words and links that the total number of pages can rank
with the number of pages in a book. (We’ve worked on some
sites with 600 separate pages.) Word count, not the page (or
pages), is the key factor. Our rate is $5.50 per 250-word page,
adjusted proportionally. If a page has 1,000 words, we charge
$22.
Proofreading
$4 per 250-word page. We have charge a
minimum of $40 for proofreading.
Book Design
This is a variant on creative editing but
is priced by the project after a discussion with the author and
a brief examination of a draft of the manuscript. Vowell
charges $50 to $60 an hour for the two-part service, $25 to $35
an hour for design and layout only. In either case, an estimate
of the time needed will be provided before work begins. A cap
will be placed on the number of hours. A contract and progress
payments are required. Such projects can take weeks.
